Some applications for our Quietstone products

Railways & Rail Stations

The Quiet Stone FMS systems is designed to be moulded into limiting environments, such as tunnels, undergrounds and stations.

The new Quiet Stone FMS has passed the LUL toxiticity where no element that could produce significant amounts of toxic fumes where detected. Therefore the FMS system is suitable for use underground and similar applications. Our new Qcote is a sprayable version of Quiet Stone FMS.

Motorway Barriers

The Quiet Stone Barrier is a unique combination of a durable acoustically absorbent Quiet Stone panel, mounted on a rigid substrate. The composition of the substrate is dependent on the local requirements but is typically of concrete post and panel construction

The modular design of the barrier is such that the erection can be carried out quickly with minimal disruption to existing traffic flows. Repair work due to impact damage is relatively easily carried out.

The Quiet Stone barrier can be tuned to accommodate the needs of a wide spectrum of local conditions.

Amongst its advantages over conventional motorway and rail noise barriers are:-

  • Excellent sound insulation
  • Excellent sound absorption
  • Overall noise reduction over a wide area
  • Long term durability
  • Speed of erection

Attractive appearance, wide choice of colours can be made to blend in or contrast with local background:-

  • Self cleaning
  • Low maintenance costs
  • Choice of a range of substrates

Shooting Ranges

Firearms training ranges host a multitude of hazards to health.

1. The potential dangers of using live ammunition

2. The damage that can be caused from the resulting noise from shooting within a closed room.

3. Contamination from lead deposited around the range following each discharge of a weapon.

4. The presence of a fire or explosive hazard resulting from the small residual amount of un-burnt propellant left after such a discharge.

The latter two hazards form a cumulative risk as more and more lead and un-burnt propellant build upon or within the fabric of the range with successive use. This build-up of pollutants requires that ranges be shut down for decontamination. The cycle time for decontamination varies with usage but is typically 6 months for an intensively used police or military range to around 2 years for a club range.

The decontamination process can quarantine a range for extended periods when traditional materials are used to line the range, since replacement is often the only solution. The only other alternative of encasing fibrous cladding seriously reduces its sound absorbing capability.

Military and police experts have now found an answer to these problems by using Quiet Stone to line their ranges. Because of its sound absorbing performance, Quiet Stone has enabled firearms training instructors with one of Britain's leading police forces to work within their range up to four times longer than they had been able to previously. It is felt that the reverberant shock wave which follows the initial sound wave impinges violently upon those areas of the body which have little flesh covering the bones; areas such as the forehead. This results in headaches after only a short term of exposure to the noise environment within the range. Quiet Stone has been found to cushion/absorb this shock wave reducing the time that personnel require away from the range.

Beside having a two hour fire resistance, Quiet Stone’s ability to be simply washed or vacuumed down means that extensive decontamination periods for removal of un-burnt propellant and lead are a thing of the past. The same interstitial configuration of the material which gives it its exceptional sound absorption performance enables these cleaning processes to take place removing the offending pollutants. Unaffected acoustically and only lightly damaged by grazing ballistic impacts, Quiet Stone can be easily repaired or replaced when any damage becomes obtrusive.

Interview Rooms / Classrooms etc

Quiet Stone is a rigid, hard wearing, easily cleaned cladding material with the appearance and texture of pumice stone. Yet it offers sound absorbing properties better than many soft materials and, correctly installed, sound insulation equivalent to a solid brick wall.

Nothing beats Quiet Stone for appearance. It is available in a range of colours.

Acoustically Quiet Stone has been thoroughly tried and tested. Our engineers can provide you with all the technical specification backed by exhaustive scientific testing carried out on our behalf by the University of Salford.

Quiet Stone has other advantages such as a two-hour fire rating and complete cleanability. Quiet Stone can be vacuumed, scrubbed and washed with detergents or even bacteriocides without damage. Like any other normal wall it will take fixings for shelves, speakers, lights etc. Quiet Stone can be cut to shape around such things as light switches, sockets and other electrical fittings. Cabling can be hidden behind Quiet Stone and individual panels can be made detachable for easy access to fuse boxes and other electrical installations

Swimming Baths, Gymnasia, Sports Halls

Noise and swimming pools are synonymous, due to the nature of the design and their end use. In competition pools where commentary is required, the noise element is sometimes so bad that speech is intelligible. Quiet Stone can provide the ideal solution, economically, acoustically and architecturally.

As well as being aesthetically appealing, Quiet Stone can be specified without any fear of damage caused by accidental knocks, without affecting any of the physical or acoustic properties.

Quiet Stone has many advantages over other traditional acoustic materials used in this application :-

  • Long maintenance free service (can last the life of the building)
  • Easily cleaned (vacuum or wash)
  • Exceptional sound absorption coefficient and noise reduction indices
  • Easily sterilised (simple biocide procedure)
  • Attractive finish

Available in a variety of colours to aesthetically enhance the building

Correctly installed Quiet Stone will not only give you the optimum acoustic balance within the studio but will also protect your recording from unwanted external noise. And of course sound penetrating out of the studio is dramatically reduced allowing the rest of your staff to work unhindered.

Quiet Stone has other advantages such as a two-hour fire rating and complete cleanability. Quiet Stone can be vacuumed, scrubbed and washed with detergents or even bacteriocides without damage. We have accredited teams of installers throughout the UK and many areas overseas who can fit Quiet Stone into even the most awkwardly shaped studio and leave you with an acoustically correct, decorative finish of which you will be justifiably proud.

Heavy Industry

  • Generators
  • Food processing
  • Woodworking & Joinery
  • Metal Fabrication
  • Bottling & Canning
  • Breweries
  • Spray booths
  • Plant & Machinery
  • Compressors

Noise pollution is increasingly being recognised as a serious industrial hazard. Reducing excessive noise levels created by plant & machinery is not just a Health and Safety requirement it is also good practice. A better working environment can also pay dividends in improved productivity.

Quiet Stone can provide an economical and practical solution in a wide range of industrial applications. It can be used to create enclosures for particularly noisy plant of any size. In many cases however a complete enclosure is not necessary and substantial reductions in noise levels can be achieved from simply cladding existing walls and partitions.

Quiet Stone offers many benefits over traditional acoustic materials which in many cases are just not suitable for an industrial environment.

Exceptional sound absorption coefficients and noise reduction indices:-

  • Tough rigid panels can withstand knocks and scrapes
  • Long maintenance free service
  • Easily cleaned (vacuum or wash)
  • Easily sterilised (simple biocide procedure)
  • Attractive finish available in a variety of colours

Innovative Applications

Quiet Stone can be used in any application so long as the designer can incorporate Quiet Stone into his invention. A prime example of Quiet Stone used in inventions is the Mine Protection Boot featured on Tomorrow's World.
